Teaching From Home
What does it look like?
I know the thought of teaching at home can at times feel overwhelming so I will try on this page to simplify it for you and hopefully clarify any or some of the questions that you may have. Firstly, I already know that you will be doing an amazing job with you children because I know how fabulous they already are. So, thank you!
Use the class timetable as your guide but not the amount of time we give at school as things don't take as long when you are working one to one. All lessons should be between 30-40mins and don't forget a movement break!
Maths
Start with a Think Mental prior to all maths lesson. Don't need to worry about marking as we will be able to see the results.
Use your i-Maths planning guide to know which page to go to next. Stick to the week and term that we are in. Parents can mark and then you can decide if you need more support. Use the support, consolidation or extension sheets that go with the i-Maths programme. Still stuck? Look at the Paul Swan site for further activities on the topic that you are working on. Or email any maths questions. All guides/sites/support work in connect library.
Mangahigh will have set activities that match the topics but only as they come up in line with planner. Again, don't need to worry about marking as we can see the results.
Mr D will be adding Maths Olympiad tasks weekly.
Homework
Homework is given weekly. We are one week behind the school week due to camp. Homework Hound can be accessed on a Monday - I can see the results and will forward certificates to students. The class homework sheet can be marked at home. Sheets and answers can be found in the connect library.
Spelling
Like the homework, we are a week behind due to camp. One new list per week. Pre-test Monday, Spelling City Tuesday, Soundwaves Wednesday, get creative with your words (see 20 ways to practise spelling in spelling folder) on Thursday and Friday is the post-test. Children can email me their pre and post test results.
Literacy
Year 6 - We have been reading Guts and for those that did not take home their workbook, the activities can be found in the literacy folder on connect. We did two pages per session as they were both linked to the same pages in the book. eg. Vocabulary work pg104-140 and Comprehension work pg 104-140.
We can see moving into Term 2 how much longer we will continue on line. For now the children can keep their completed book at home. When we have a clearer picture next term the children may need to scan their work and send it through submissions as a pdf. I will let you know.
A new book and activities will be sent through next term. I have a pdf of the book for next term so you will not need to purchase a book.
Year 5 - We have been reading You are a Bad Man, Mr Gum. The students have activities set. One activity at a time. They should also be well into creating their diorama with accompanying writing describing their choices for their work and then sending me a photo of their completed dioramas. They can email their writing and bring in their dioramas when we all return. The children have a book review to complete which can also be emailed through. A new book and activities will be sent through next term. I have a pdf of the book for next term so you will not need to purchase a book.
English Stars
Because of the coronavirus we have been given access to the English Stars programme. Email me to get your individual passwords. I will unlock the units that I would like you to complete and the beauty is it can be done on line, like Think Mentals, and I can see the progress and results. Again, no longer than 30 mins at a time on the programme. It will save your work.
Writing
I have placed a powerpoint with accompanying activities in the writing folder. There is also some learning opportunities in the narrative and figurative language weebly pages. Once the powerpoint and activities are complete the children can write a narrative. On the developing plot slide it says 'The day the school closed...' What adventures (not meaning virus related) could the children go on. It is a narrative so the sky's the limit! Of course, if you have another idea that you would like to write about - GREAT!
The completed narratives can be submitted as a pdf. I look forward to reading them.
Reading
There are 60 reading task cards in a reading folder based on the Reading Connection strategies - finding the main idea. compare and contrast, cause and effect, identifying the authors purpose, making inferences and drawing conclusions, sequencing, fact and opinion, making predictions and recalling facts and details. Each card comes with some questions and a challenge. As long as you write the name of each card as your title, the answers can be written into your language or literacy books or on loose paper if not. The answers are included at the end of each section for someone to mark.
The class has been given a code to access EPIC which provides a vast collection of books to read online. Code is in the reading file in the connect library.
Health
One Health lesson per week. Each activity will be placed in the Health folder in the connect library.
Grammar/Punctuation
One explicit activity per week will be placed in the library.
Civics
I have placed a powerpoint with accompanying activities in the civics folder. Again once you 30-40 mins is up stop, have a break and then move onto the next topic. One session per week for civics.

BTNBehind the News (more commonly known as BTN) is a long-running news programme broadcast on the ABC made in Adelaide and aimed at school-aged children (8–13 years of age). BtN is aimed at upper primary and lower secondary students with the hope of helping them understand issues and events outside their own lives.
Behind the News explores news using the current language, trendy music and popular culture of youths. The programme explains the basic concepts that underpin the issues and events, while also providing background information in the hopes that children will take an interest. www.abc.net.au/btn/classroom/
Starting in Term 2 the ABC will also be broadcasting a new School TV on weekdays from 10am - 3pm.
Assessments
Next term I will have more idea of how we will assess. Hopefully, we will be all back but it is more important that we are all well so that we even have the option to come back! We may have to send pages of your i-Maths tracker home, do ACER online or just complete a test that I set up on line. I do look forward to reading your narratives though.
I hope this has been of some assistance for you. Like you, I am learning too. I am used to having my class in front of me and I love it. That is why I became a teacher. So stay safe so we can all come back. Don't forget there is also a page on my weebly for activities other than school work and I am still posting photos onto my 'What are we up to page.'
